Maria is a first generation coffee farmer who lives with her husband and children in Jacaltenango. At first, they just grew coffee for home consumption, but then their interest in producing coffee began to grow. With help from the El Sendero Coop, they were able to learn the necessary skills to meet their goal of selling high quality coffee. Maria is part of the cooperative El Sendero which provides coffee producers support and information around Concepcion Huista in Huehuetenango region. The cooperative was formed in 2016 and it has 196 coffee producing members, of which 62 are women and 134 are men. The cooperative focuses on gender equality among coffee producers and especially supports young coffee producers. This farm is called Tzisbalchan, which is a Popti Mayan word for a native plant species that has medicinal properties. Maria’s children take a leadership role in processing the coffee after it is harvested; they ferment the coffee for 32 hours due to the relatively cool microclimate in the region.
