Monteclara comes from Guatemala’s Nuevo Oriente region, located in the far eastern part of the country near the borders of Honduras and El Salvador. It’s a relatively young coffee-growing region, with cultivation beginning in the 1950s, but it has quickly gained recognition for its quality. The area’s inactive volcanoes have left behind rich, fertile soils that are ideal for coffee production, and farms are situated at elevations between 1200–1600 meters. The climate is often cloudy and rainy, which can make harvest and drying more challenging, as higher humidity slows the drying process. Depending on conditions, producers will dry coffee on patios or use guardiolas to maintain consistency. These slower growing conditions contribute to a cup profile that’s complex and full of character. Monteclara is sourced from a collection of smallholder farms in Oriente, many of which have been family-operated for generations. Like many producers in Guatemala, these farmers often manage their own wet mills, allowing them to oversee quality from harvest through processing and drying.
