Alberto is a first-generation coffee farmer living with his wife and children outside Jacaltenango. After years of migrant labor, he was able to purchase land where his family planted coffee with care for the local environment. He is part of El Sendero, a cooperative founded in 2016 with 196 members that emphasizes gender equality and supports young producers. His farm, named Paya’ (“birth of the river” in the Mayan Popti language), reflects the cultural roots of the region. Alberto’s children help oversee processing, which includes careful fermentation, washing, and patio drying to ensure quality. In recognition of their work, Alberto’s coffee won the Festival Huistlan competition in 2022 for the best coffees in the San Antonio Huista region of Huehuetenango.
